During the academic year 1987-88, under the profound leadership and unparalleled effort and foresight of Sri. CP Narayanan , the then MLA of Payyannur constituency , Govt. Teacher Training Institute Mathamangalam started operation. Initially from 1987 it was working with two batches of 40 students each in 4 rooms in Mathamangalam Govt High School, up to 2004. In 2000 NCTE, the Accrediting Agency of training centres visited the institution and found the infrastructure and other facilities inadequate and thereby reduced the seats from 40 to 22.
